India records 260 new cases, total active at 1,828 as per the latest data from the Union Health Ministry on December 18.

The centre government has written to state and union territories, urging then to maintain continuous vigilance in light of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and the identification of the first instance of the new JN.1 variant in Kerala.

On December 16, a case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN-1 was detected in 79 yrs old woman from Kerala as part of an ongoing routine surveillance activity of the India SARS COV- 2 Genomic consortium INSACOG.

There is no evidence to suggest that JN-1 can cause worse symptoms or spread faster than the variants already in circulation.

According to health ministry website , the number of the people who recovered from the infection increased to 4.46 crore. So far 5,33,317 people have died due to COVID-19, resulting in a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent. The case fatality rate remain constant at 1.19 percent.

According to a Indian express report, a traveller from Singapore to Tamil Nadu’s tiruchirapalli was previously detected to have the sub-variant. At least 15 cases of JN.1 have also been detected in Goa.
